Helping Couples Grow Their Family Through Adoption
Every child deserves a loving home, and at Barber Tubis Law, P.C., our experienced adoption attorneys are proud to be part of finding homes for children and babies. They can guide clients through the often complex process, including interstate adoptions when the finalization takes place in California.
The process can often be overwhelming for prospective parents and for parents who are looking to place their child up for adoption. It begins with a pre-adoption consultation to explore your options and discuss the necessary steps for moving forward. We know that every family is different, and our lawyers work to get to know your situation so that they can best support you.
Providing Personalized Adoption Representation And Support
There are two main types of adoption: open and closed. In a closed adoption, the birth parents are not involved in your life or the life of the child. In an open adoption, the birth parents can be involved in the child’s life in some way. Each option has benefits and drawbacks for every party. Our attorneys can help adoptive parents explore their options and work out arrangements that will be in everyone’s best interests.
Our team handles a variety of adoption types, including those involving:
- Stepparents
- Adoptions from probate guardianships
- Grandparents and related family members
- Single parents
- Special needs
Our compassionate and experienced adoption attorneys are prepared to help you through a variety of adoption scenarios and provide ongoing support through our other estate planning and family law practices.
Stepparent Adoption And Adoptions From Guardianships
Miranda is experienced representing the stepparent or guardian in both agreed upon adoptions and in cases where the natural parent opposes the adoption. Sometimes, opposed adoptions can be resolved by determining that the natural parent’s consent is not required. Other times, the natural parents must consent to the termination of their parental rights. Miranda is highly skilled in negotiating the often emotionally fraught negotiations between natural parents and adoptive parents.
Miranda is also on the court panel for appointed counsel for natural parents against whom termination has been requested.
Guiding Clients Through The Adult Adoption Process
Adult adoptions are most commonly desired by parents and children who have been living as such for many years or decades. Typically, these begin as a stepparent/child relationship, but can also occur between other related or unrelated adults. Adult adoptions are also used to establish a legally recognized parent-child relationship so that the adoptive adult may inherit property in accordance with probate law.
